Wave 3 | Prompt 1: A faction of an organization built around belief
Type: Organization
I had some trouble with this prompt at first, and it wasn’t until a week after the diamond prompts were revealed that I finally had an idea for this one. Actually, the idea was already there, part of the Dragonbane Order. This prompt, however, called for a faction of an organization; that was the part that made it difficult.
I chose to take the Scalebreaker “unit” from the Dragonbane Order and make it its own thing. The Scalebreakers are a secret brotherhood faction that specializes in killing dragonkin. At first, they were part of the Dragonbane Order, under Operatives, alongside the Enforcers. But I moved them to the Commoners, as this is an external faction and not technically part of the Order. This was also inspired by the Dark Brotherhood from Skyrim.
The Scalebreakers faction consists of a select group of exceptionally skilled individuals who have undergone rigorous training to excel in combat against a wide variety of dragonkin species. Their expertise in dragonkin knowledge and prowess in combat make them valuable assets, often being called upon by the Dragonbane Order to undertake missions aimed at eliminating dragonkin threats. In addition to their association with the Dragonbane Order, some Scalebreakers are also within the Dragonguard, using their specialized skills in extreme cases.
Now, the Dragonbane Order knows about the Scalebreakers, which is why they secretly call upon them for missions. The Dragonguard, however, does not necessarily know that Scalebreakers still exist and that some Scalebreaker individuals are actually within the Dragonguard (talking about both the local city dragonguard and the global alliance).
It would probably be something kinda like this -
unfortunately, a dragonkin needed to be ended because of its aggression and attacked a group from the Dragonguard, and this one guy was able to neutralize it seemingly quite easily. But maybe he’s just good, I’m not gonna question it.
The Scalebreakers are a secret brotherhood, so not even the Dragonguard knows that some of them are members.
Within the hierarchy of the Dragonbane Order, Scalebreakers are categorized as part of the Commoners, indicating that they are not involved in internal affairs or tasked even with guard duties like the Enforcers.
They have a similar agenda to the Dragonbane Order, which is why they will call upon the Scalebreakers sometimes.
The Scalebreakers hold the view that dragonkin are untamed creatures and have never been fully domesticated. They see them as a constant threat to humans, as their wild nature makes them potentially harmful or prone to attack. In contrast, the Dragonbane Order maintains a belief that society should alter its perception of dragonkin. The Scalebreakers argue that reducing the dragonkin population is crucial to safeguarding humanity, while the Dragonbane Order prioritizes shaping societal attitudes towards these creatures.
I don’t know what the organization’s structure will be quite yet; it might be something similar to the Dark Brotherhood from Skyrim. It just so happens that the 5 families of dragonkin also correspond to the 5 members who run the governing body of the Dark Brotherhood: four speakers and one listener.
The leadership of the Scalebreakers consists of five individuals, each representing one of the five prominent families of dragonkin; Amphithere, Dragon, Drake, Wyrm, and Wyvern.
I don't know; this is just some symbology thing. Maybe each of the five members specializes in one dragonkin family.
While writing the history section for the article, I decided that this was actually the predecessor to the Dragonguard Alliance and the Dragonbane Order.
The Scalebreakers predate the formation of the Dragonguard Alliance and the Dragonbane Order by several years. Originating during the Twenty Year Scourge, they emerged as a small but dedicated faction committed to combatting the menace of dragonkin. Focused on honing their skills and strategies to enhance their chances of survival during the Scourge, the Scalebreakers eventually evolved into a more expansive coalition known as the Dragonguard.
Although most members transitioned into the Dragonguard, following the war, a select few departed from the organization and continued their clandestine brotherhood. These individuals went on to offer their specialized services to the Dragonbane Order, thus perpetuating their legacy and expertise in dealing with dragon-related threats.
